Introduction Navratri is a nine-day festival worshipping the nine forms of Goddess Durga. The Vrat Katha is primarily the story of how the Goddess defeated the buffalo demon, Mahishasura.

The Story (Vrat Katha) The demon Mahishasura performed severe penance and pleased Lord Brahma. He got a boon that no man or god could kill him. Arrogant with power, he defeated Indra and conquered the heavens.

The powerless Gods approached the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva). Their combined anger created a blinding light, which took the form of Goddess Durga. Each God gave her their weapon—Shiva gave his Trident, Vishnu his Chakra, and Himalaya gave her a Lion.

The Goddess challenged Mahishasura. The battle raged for nine days. Mahishasura changed his form many times—from buffalo to lion to elephant. Finally, on the tenth day (Vijayadashami), while he was transforming into a buffalo, the Goddess pinned him down and beheaded him.

Conclusion The Gods praised her as “Mahishasura Mardini.” Reading this story gives strength (Shakti) to overcome the demons of fear and ego in our own lives.
