The Story (Vrat Katha) Once, a money lender had seven sons. Before Diwali, the daughter-in-law went to the forest to dig soil to renovate their house. While digging, her spade accidentally hit a Syau (hedgehog/porcupine) cub, killing it. The mother hedgehog cursed the woman: “Just as you killed my child, your children will die.”
Over time, all seven of the woman’s sons died one by one. She was heartbroken. An old woman in the village told her that her past sin was the cause and advised her to pray to Ahoi Mata (Goddess of the Cub).
The woman repented deeply. On the day of Ashtami, she drew the image of the cub and the hedgehog on the wall and worshipped Ahoi Mata. She fasted without water and prayed for forgiveness.
Pleased by her true repentance, Ahoi Mata forgave her. Miraculously, all her seven sons came back to life.
Conclusion Mothers observe this fast to protect their children from harm. It teaches that repentance and prayer can reverse even the worst misfortunes.
